Dylan Fraser has achieved a rare double at the 2024 CCNZ National Awards.

A finalist in the Z Emerging Leader Award category, Dylan has also overseen Fulton Hogan’s Chatham Islands maintenance contract which, with Stantec, is a finalist in the Asset Maintenance and Management category. He’s shown here demonstrating how to deal with the wind on the Chathams.

In just seven years Dylan, 29, has gone from graduate to contracting divisional manager, responsible for a team of 66 across three departments in the Wellington region.

Joining Fulton Hogan with a degree in biochemistry – he initially wanted to be a scientist ­­­­­­­– Dylan has been Wellington City Council traffic and road maintenance contract manager, project engineer on the Ngaio Gorge Slope Stabilisation Project and, now, leading the regional maintenance division.

“You don’t often come across someone who is as curious about how things work ­ and how to make them work better,” says Fulton Hogan’s NZ Chief Executive, Ben Hayward. “With his science background, Dylan is intensely interested in what makes systems, processes and people tick.  He has the curiosity of a scientist and communication skills to match.”

The infrastructure sector’s answer to David Attenborough, perhaps?

Dylan is driven by the belief that there are almost infinite ways to learn, and from people of all ages.

“Our three-year-old daughter Lily was helping me wash the car the other day and I was fascinated by how she used the brush,” he says.

Dylan is also fascinated by what makes people tick. He took psychology papers at Otago University where, incidentally, he met his partner, Lauren, who is now an educational psychologist.

He played a key role in Fulton Hogan receiving a five-year extension to the maintenance contract with Hutt City. Here’s what the Council’s Maintenance and Renewals Manager, Colin Lunn, had to say: “This was a testament to Dylan and his team’s capabilities. Dylan brings a lot of knowledge and energy to find solutions, assisting the smooth and professional delivery of our maintenance contracts.  Dylan leads his teams well and understands how to keep his staff and clients happy, whilst maintaining positive momentum.”

The CCNZ award winners will be announced at the CCNZ National Conference in Invercargill on 16 August.
