4 November 2024:
Fulton Hogan is working with Christchurch International Airport Ltd (CIAL) to help double the airport’s freight handling capacity.
The Canterbury team has been awarded the contract to extend the airport’s freight apron with an additional 16,000m2 of concrete hardstands and 45,000m2 of structural pavement.
The contract also includes installing 3 Waters infrastructure, communications and power, new concrete structures including floodlight foundations, gatic slot drains and retaining walls. When completed in late 2025, the apron will accommodate eight Boeing 737-sized aircraft or four wide-bodied aircraft.
The new apron is CIAL’s response to rising demand for air freight, driven mainly by increases in e-commerce and exports of high-quality, perishable goods from the South Island.
Christchurch Airport CEO, Justin Watson, says the expansion will support the region’s growth.
“Our partnership with Fulton Hogan means we can meet the growing demand for air freight, driving economic growth and strengthening our role as a vital link in the global supply chain.”
Fulton Hogan’s Divisional Manager, Richard Lee, says a key component of the tender submission was the team’s experience working in the CIAL airside environment. He says the project will also involve multiple parts of Fulton Hogan’s supply chain.
“It’s the supply chain in full swing, involving most of the Canterbury region’s teams, from quarries supplying aggregates, bitumen and asphalt supply, drainage, electrical, construction, surfacing, civil construction, line marking and landscaping.”
