21 December 2024:
These before–and–after images at ‘Devil’s Elbow’ on SH2 in Hawke’s Bay give a sense of the scale of the reconstruction projects by the TREC team in 2024. Devil’s Elbow is a winding and hilly section of SH2, north of Napier.
Eighteen months after its establishment, the Transport Rebuild East Coast (TREC) Alliance of NZTA, KiwiRail, Fulton Hogan, Downer and Higgins, working alongside local contractors, has completed more than 70 percent (230 in number) of the state highway repair and reinstatement projects.
Just over 1,000,000 hours have been worked, and 3,359 people inducted.
The goal is to complete recovery works in Hawke’s Bay in 2025 and Tairāwhiti in 2026.
To reduce delays to travellers over the Christmas break, TREC will temporarily close most work sites from Thursday 19 December 2024 until Monday 6 January 2025.
