Implementing a Solution
When people can travel safely and more efficiently, communities are healthier, happier and more productive.
The M80 Ring Road is one of Melbourne’s busiest freeway and carries up to 142,000 vehicles each day. Before the upgrade, the freeway exceeded its capacity in peak periods, causing traffic disruption and delays along the entire route.
This project involved an upgrade to the section of the M80 Ring Road, from Edgars Road, to Plenty Road in Bundoora, improving safety for drivers and local communities by increasing the number of lanes between some interchanges and reducing merging movements of traffic entering and exiting the freeway.
Project features included:
- An additional lane in each direction, creating three lanes each way, plus an extra lane between interchanges
- Bridge widening and strengthening to carry the additional lanes
- Resurfacing works to create a safer driving environment
- Traffic lights on entry ramps
- Overhead electronic signs to communicate speed limits and lane availability
- Electronic on-road message boards
- Planting and feature walls, creating a new look and feel to the road
Fulton Hogan delivered value-for-money by managing the internal supply chain through our unique vertically-integrated business model and supplying more than 100,000 tonnes of asphalt for the upgrade from our own plant, located conveniently in Victoria.
This enabled our client the convenience of dealing with just one supplier across the entire project, ensuring that we retained full responsibility for all the materials, design services and construction results.
