One hundred Fulton Hogan Hiways staff in the Northern Division have celebrated a first for the company in Fiji, 365 Zero Harm days.

The milestone was achieved by the Northern teams based at depots in Savusavu, Natua in Seaqaqa, Taveuni and the Labasa office.

Zero Harm is a company-wide objective that aims to ensure that nobody goes home injured, which means that instead of aiming to minimise the number of workplace injuries, the business’s objective is to eliminate them completely.

In a special ceremony held in Savusavu recently staff received special recognition certificates. “For me personally, if you hurt just one person, you have failed and it is not just an individual who gets hurt, but a whole family that is also affected,” said John Tinsley, FHH’s Safety, Quality, Training and Environmental Manager.

Mr Tinsley also paid tribute to the support of their families, and the leadership team under North Contract Manager Mark Large, who have worked very hard to achieve this positive safety culture.

Fulton Hogan Hiways General Manager Duncan Fraser adds: “This is not a competition, but something others should also aspire to. One of the best ways of bringing about change is leading by example. This is also about trying to change overall attitudes towards safety by getting more people engaged.

“This is just the start. I would be much happier if we can say we have gone through  many years of zero harm. So there is still a lot of work to do.”
