Pollution incidents
Under the NSW environmental legislation pollution incidents causing or threatening material harm to the environment must be notified to the relevant authorities. Material harm includes actual or potential harm to the health or safety of human beings or to ecosystems that is not trivial, or actual or potential loss or property damage exceeding $10,000.

Community Notification
In an unlikely event of pollution incident occurring that threatens to cause harm to human health or the environment, the following notification protocol will be followed:
- Environmental and Community Relations Managers staff will determine the community notification catchment depending on the nature of each incident
- Early warnings will be issued by phone calls, web updates and door knocking to affected residents
- Notifications to affected residents will include details of incident, time frame of the impact and the mitigation measures put in place
- Instructions to residents to minimise health impact i.e. for airborne chemicals residents will be advised to close windows and doors, to take extra care if they have respiratory issues, keep children inside and protect animals, where possible, and
- Sensitive receivers i.e. schools, nursing homes and hospitals will receive priority notification of pollution incidents.
