Major Collaboration At Whenuapai

12 August 2019 – Nine teams from across Fulton Hogan have teamed up to strengthen 18,000 square metres of RNZAF’s Whenuapai base, and three hardstands.

Waikato Pavement Solutions, Coastline Markers, the Dunedin Electrical team, the Auckland Sealing, Paving and Milling teams, Bulk Transport, Survey and the Auckland Laboratory were all involved. The rebuilt runway has just been officially opened by the Chief of Defence, Air Marshall Kevin Short and Auckland Base Commander, Group Captain Andy Scott.

The existing pavement was demolished and excavated to 1.3 metres, and 3,000m3 of existing concrete pavement was stockpiled, crushed and reused in the new pavement layers. Additional works included 450m of new storm water pipes, 200m of storm water structures, a new line marking layout and renewed airfield assets.

A highlight of the project was its zero lost time injuries record, winning the team the NZ Defence Force’s Airport Safety Week award. Fulton Hogan has a significant relationship with the New Zealand Defence Force across New Zealand, as well as partnering in the Defence Force’s Limited Service Volunteer (LSV) programme.
