National significance programme

This was a key project in the Government’s roads of national significance programme, with the Christchurch Southern Motorway Stage 1 (CSM1) built as a four-lane, median-separated motorway between Collins Street and Halswell Junction Road.

The first part of the Christchurch Southern Corridor, CSM1, opened to traffic in mid-December 2012 and now provides a safer, more efficient and reliable route between the Central City, Lyttelton Port and southwest Christchurch.

To facilitate this important development, Fulton Hogan built 16 major structures, including 6 intersections along the motorway route, relocating services and extension of traffic lanes – all carried out on a very busy local road that services a growing industrial area.

Project success

The success of the project won the Roading Excellence Awards in the Major Projects Category (with value greater than NZ$30m), with judges citing the excellent relationship Fulton Hogan maintained with its client, NZTA. The project also won the National Award in the Canterbury Construction Awards in 2013.

To date, the project has survived a major earthquake and allowed efficient emergency response into the central City. For a company that prides community safety above all else, this has been one of the best outcomes possible, with the added bonus of a multi-award winning project that was delivered on budget, six months early and all with an outstanding safety record for all involved.
