Arthurs Lake Hydro
The Arthurs Lake Hydro Project was part of the Midlands Irrigation Scheme – Tasmania’s largest-ever infrastructure project.
It was designed to supply 38,500ML of water from Arthurs Lake each year for distribution to a traditionally dry area of Tasmania. It literally changed the face of Tasmanian farming and completed a vision that spanned more than 170 years when Captain Arthur Cotton first set down the prospects for irrigation in this part of the colony.
The contract was for the design and construction of an offtake structure, 34 kilometers of pipeline, a 6MW hydro power station and 15 kilometers of transmission line in the Central Highlands.
In the process of delivering one of the most technically challenging hydro projects in the world, Fulton Hogan made several significant innovations (including an anti-islanding system to shut down the power station immediately in the event of a fault), while completing the project on time and to budget.
It also exceeded performance-based specification requirements, while meeting safety goals in a working environment that was particularly challenging.
