The level crossing at Evans Road, Lyndhurst was removed in October 2020 and replaced with a new road bridge.

These works were delivered by Metropolitan Roads Program Alliance (MRPA), made up of Alliance partners Fulton Hogan, Metro Trains Melbourne (MTM), and the Level Crossing Removal Project (LXRP).

The project scope included:

• Constructing a shared use path on the western side of the bridge
• An architecturally designed retaining wall, mimicking the visual effect of wind in grassland
• Upgraded intersection and traffic signals at Boland Drive, Evans Road and Merinda Park Boulevard
• Pedestrian refuge and connections to the existing path at Andretti Avenue
• Over 46,000 new trees, shrubs and plants in the project area.

The new 620-metre road bridge was built using 135,000 tonnes of compacted earth, 450 tonnes of Australian made steel and more than 3000 cubic metres of locally sourced concrete.

For 15 years Evans Road was closed at the level crossing for community safety. The opening of the new bridge has reconnected the Lynbrook and Lyndhurst communities and decreased travel times, making it up to four times faster to travel over the rail line to the South Gippsland Highway.
