Turning The Table On Speed

3 July 2023

Speed tables are one of the fastest growing ways of getting people to slow down.

But while there’s major demand for them, they require often extensive traffic management during installation, as well as curing time.

Fulton Hogan is addressing this by developing pre-cast modular speed tables, for which a patent is pending. Representatives from Auckland Transport, Auckland Airport, Aecom, Beca and Eliga, along with Engineering Solutions, Fulton Hogan Auckland, Fulton Hogan Precast and Major Projects have gathered at Fulton Hogan’s North Urban Maintenance Yard to learn more about the possibilities.

Beaudene Pumipi says the goal is both to address a problem and help clients address road safety objectives.

“And who better to do this than a company with full supply chain production, delivery and installation capability?”

The benefits of pre-casting includes minimising the weather effect, reducing health & safety risks, and increasing speed and efficiency of installation. From a client perspective, it can reduce public push-back about lengthy road works, and add flexibility – modular speed tables can be removed to allow for ducting or relocation.

Although the cost can be slightly higher than the traditional approach at lower volumes or when there is tricky geometry, there are potentially major financial savings at volume and where considerable traffic management would otherwise be required.

Fulton Hogan has also already casted and installed cycle separators in Auckland – most notably in Mission Bay – and pre-casting is also envisaged for traffic islands and roundabouts.
